Frequently Asked Questions
What is the LetterStream API?
Application Programming Interface (API): APIs are mechanisms that enable two software components to communicate with each other using a set of definitions and protocols.
The LetterStream API lets approved customers programmatically submit mailings from their own software instead of using our website. It’s meant for higher-volume and automated workflows.
Is the LetterStream API right for me?
We’ll help confirm whether the API is the best solution for your use case, since many customers find the website faster for lower-volume or ad-hoc mailings. The API shines when you need automation, scale, and deeper integration.
How do I qualify for API access?
Start by creating your free LetterStream account, then email support from the email address on you used to sign-up. Provide a quick overview of your company, what you want to send, estimated volume/frequency, and which API mode fits your ideal needs. You’ll also need a developer (in-house or contracted) to implement the integration, and your system must be able to generate PDFs (and recipient data via CSV) for submission. Once reviewed and approved, we enable API access and share the documentation docs to get you started.
Do you offer different API modes?
- LetterStream supports three API modes:
Automation Mode
- Use LetterStream to automate and speed up your organization’s own mailings. It’s the simplest and fastest mode to implement.
Monetization Mode
- Resell LetterStream-powered mailings under your brand. You control pricing, billing, and customer support, while LetterStream stays behind the scenes and processes everything through your master account.
Partnership Mode
- Integrate your own software with LetterStream so your customers send mail from their own LetterStream accounts. Customers create their own LetterStream account under your unique partner link, pay LetterStream directly, and receive LetterStream support for LetterStream-related matters—while you handle setup and software-related help. This is the most complex option to set up.
What file types does the API support?
The API system works with PDF documents and CSV address files. Your software should be able to generate PDFs to send to us.
Are API mailings processed automatically when I submit them?
Not quite—jobs can be submitted via API, but they won’t be processed until they’re paid for. Payment is still required before production begins. You can pre-fund your account to ensure smooth entry of mailings into our production queue.
Do I need a developer to use the API?
Yes. You’ll need either an in-house developer or someone contracted to implement the integration on your side.
Does the API return status and error responses I need to handle?
Yes. API Partners are expected to capture and programmatically handle all API responses (success or failure). This helps avoid situations where a sender thinks a job was submitted when it wasn’t received.
What happens after I’m approved?
Once we confirm your mode and requirements, we enable API access for your account (including test) and share documentation plus next steps to go live.
